The best time to sail in Menorca

Written by Sergi, skipper and owner of Elan Menorca. Month by month, with real insight from someone who sails this coast from April to October every year.

"When is the best time to go to Menorca by boat?" It's the question that comes up most when someone is planning their holiday. And the honest answer is that Menorca is wonderful to sail from April to October: there's no "bad" month, just different ones. The key is knowing what you're after —warm water, empty coves, the best price, long days— because each season shines in something different.

This is the month-by-month guide I wish I'd read before choosing dates, told from the deck. By the end you'll also understand the factor that really rules in Menorca: the wind.

The quick answer

If you want the headline without reading the whole guide:

May and June: the sailor's spring

For many sailors, this is the best Menorca. The countryside is green, the coves are practically empty and prices are low and mid season. In May the water is still cool for long swims, but the light and the calm more than make up for it; it's ideal if you value peace and price over the dip.

June is, in my opinion, one of the two best moments of the year: the days are the longest (light until almost 9:30 pm), the water is already perfectly swimmable and the great July rush hasn't arrived yet. A private sailing trip in June gives you summer without the crowds.

July and August: high summer

These are the star months and the most in demand, for good reason: the water is at its warmest (25-26 °C), the sun is generous and the atmosphere is unbeatable. The flip side you already know: it's high season, the island fills up, the famous coves get crowded and the car parks are full by mid-morning.

This is precisely where a boat makes the difference: while people on land fight over a patch of shade, you anchor in coves you can only reach by sailing. One essential tip: in July and August book weeks in advance. We work with a single sailboat and the dates fly.

September: the best-kept secret

If you make me choose a single month, I choose September. The sea has soaked up all the summer's heat, so the water is still warm, but the island empties suddenly as soon as the school year starts. Fewer people in the coves, rates lower than August and a golden afternoon light that makes every sunset sailing trip look like a postcard. It's the favourite time of those who come back.

April and October: low season for those in the know

The edges of our season (we open on 1 April and close on 31 October) are for a specific profile: those who value complete calm and the best price over swimming for hours. The water is cool, yes, but the sailing is delightful, the coves are yours and the rate is the cheapest of the year. For a photography outing, an intimate celebration or simply switching off, these are underrated months.

The Tramontana: the factor that really decides your day

Here's the detail no brochure tells you and that, in practice, matters more than the month: the wind. Menorca is shaped by the Tramontana, the strong north wind that can appear at any time of year. Far from being a problem, it's the reason the island has two complementary coasts:

That's why we never lock in the route weeks ahead: we check the forecast with you the day before and choose the good coast. Whether it's blowing a Tramontana or dead calm, there's almost always a side of the island that's perfect for sailing. You'll find the details of both itineraries on our sailing routes in Menorca page.

And how does the season affect the price?

The season doesn't only change the weather: it changes the rate too. We keep it completely transparent, with no surprises. Broadly, a full-day trip ranges from €800 in low season (April-May and October) to €1,050 in high season (23 June to 10 September), always for the whole boat for your group of up to 12 people. If your priority is price, May, early June and October are your allies; if it's warm water, September gives you the best balance.

You can see the full seasonal breakdown and what each trip includes in the rates section, or in how our sailboat charter with skipper works.

Frequently asked questions about when to sail

What is the best time to sail in Menorca?

For most people, September is the best time: the water is warm after the whole summer, there are fewer tourists than in July and August, the light is beautiful and prices drop from high season. June is the other great moment, with long days, a pleasant sea and far fewer crowds.

Can you sail in Menorca in May or October?

Yes, and they're great months for anyone after peace and a better price. The water is cooler for swimming, but the sailing is lovely, the coves are empty and the rate is low season. We start the season on 1 April and close it on 31 October.

What is the Tramontana and how does it affect boat trips?

The Tramontana is the strong north wind typical of Menorca. When it blows, we sail the south coast, which stays sheltered and calm; when the wind comes from the south, we enjoy the north coast. That's why we decide the route the day before based on the forecast: there's almost always a good coast to sail.

When is the water warmest for swimming in Menorca?

The water reaches its most pleasant temperature from mid-July to late September, around 25-26 °C. In June it's perfectly swimmable, and in May and October it's cooler but fine for a quick dip after snorkelling.
